6th: Today students learned about a statistical question. We took notes, did an activity, and worked on a worksheet. Students are asked to bring gluesticks and scissors tomorrow.
7th: Today students refreshed themselves on what statistical questions are. We did an activity and did some practice. We also discussed different ways we gather data. Students need to bring gluesticks and scissors tomorrow.
8th: Today students learned about statistical questions. This will help us in our discussion tomorrow on 2-tiered statistical questions. Students need to bring gluesticks and scissors tomorrow.
August 21:
6th: Today students came up with their own statistical questions, using knowledge of population and questioning. They worked in groups. There is no homework.

Week 2
August 24:
6th: Today students took notes on mean. We had some time to practice. Students need to complete 1-10 odd problems for homework; students can use a calculator but must show their work as we discussed in class. No work, no credit. Students also need to bring their devices all week.

7th: Today students took notes on random sampling and how it is good/bad for studies. Students used prior questioning that we had from last week to expand their knowledge. Students need to bring their devices this week, as we will be using them in class.
8th: Today students took notes on positive correlation. We did some practice with positive correlation. This will help us prep for our activity tomorrow. Students do not have homework but need to bring their device tomorrow to complete the activity.
August 25:
6th: Today students expanded their knowledge. We took notes on median, mode, and range. Students worked with number sets to find the mmmr of each data set. Whatever was not finished in class is homework. Students need to bring their device tomorrow. They have a quiz Friday.
7th: Today students took notes on IQR, as well as mmmr. Students worked on practice problems. Whatever they did not finish in class is homework. They have a quiz Friday.
8th: Today students did an interactive activity with positive correlation. They measured one another's height and graphed this on a scatterplot. Students need to complete the graphing activity, along with the analysis paragraph, if they did not finish it for homework. They have a quiz Friday. The questions they need to answer as apart of their analysis are here:
1. Is this graph a positive or negative correlation? How do you know?
2. What was the dependent variable? What was the independent variable? How do we know what is the independent versus dependent variables?
3. What conclusion can be drawn from the graph? (what does the graph prove?) Are there any exceptions to the norm? How do you know?
4. How would you expect this to be for adults? For kids? Why? Make sure you have solid reasoning to back your theories.
August 26:
6th: Today students did an activity measuring height and shoe size. They have two problems for homework. Problem number 1: Find the mean, median, mode, and range for height. Problem number 2: Find the mean, median, mode, and range for shoe size. The third problem is a preview for next week's topic of graph types. Students are to take their values for shoe size and graph their frequency on a table. Frequency is on the y axis, shoe sizes (from 4-->10.5) go on the x axis.
7th: Today students took notes on interquartile range. Students completed some practice problems in class. For homework, students need to complete 1-3 on this worksheet, solving for IQR only. Do not worry about finding the mmmr.
8th: Today students did an interactive activity related to negative correlation. Students are to graph their results as best they can, and we will finish the graphing piece tomorrow. They need to answer questions 1-2 from yesterday's post above. We will complete 3 and 4 tomorrow in class.
August 27:
6th: Today students turned in their homework. We went over a few problems together. For homework, students have to find the mean, median, mode, and range of rainfall in Boston for the year 2010-2011. The snowfall totals can be found here. Students are reminded of their quiz tomorrow.
7th: Today students turned in their homework. After, students took notes on finding the mean with an outlier included and finding the mean without an outlier included. For homework, students need to look at the snowfall totals for 2003-3004 season and compute the mean snowfall with outliers included and without outliers included. Students are reminded of their quiz tomorrow.
8th: Today students compiled the final piece of data for their graphs and answered the remaining two questions of their analysis. After, we took brief notes and students completed some practice problems. Students are reminded of their quiz tomorrow.

Week 3
August 31st
6th: Today we talked about dot plots. We took notes and did an interactive activity. For homework, students need to compile data for hours spent sleeping on weekdays with regards to mmmr; students also need to create a dot plot for hours spent doing homework, and then analyze the data with regards to mmmr.
7th: Today students took notes on box and whisker plots. Students need to make box and whisker plots for the 5 problems I dictated to students in class.
8th: Today we took notes on perfect and no correlation types. For homework, students need to review their notes; we will be doing an extensive activity on this tomorrow in class.
September 1:
6th: Today students took notes on histograms. We did an activity and students gathered class data. For homework, students need to complete their histogram, as well as find the mmmr of their data, if possible.
7th: Today students took notes on center, spread, and shape. We related this to what we know about box and whisker plots, as well as other data types. Students need to come to class prepared tomorrow to practice.
8th: Today students worked in groups and at stations on real-life examples of positive, negative, and no correlation graphs. There is no homework.
September 2:
6th: Today students worked on a mini project. Students conducted their own mini study of 17 students, and were required to create both a dot plot AND a histogram. Tomorrow in class we will work on the analysis piece. In addition, students need to bring their device tomorrow and Friday. They will have a test next Thursday or Friday.
7th: Today students worked on various worksheets based on what they felt they needed help, based on what we have gone over thus far. There is no homework. Students need to bring devices tomorrow and will have a test next Thursday or Friday.
8th: Today students took notes on frequency tables. We did some examples in class. Either tomorrow or Friday will be a workday. Students need to bring their devices tomorrow. Students will have a quiz next Thursday or Friday.
September 3:
All classes took the STAR assessment. Students need to bring their devices tomorrow.
6th: Analysis Questions for Mini Project
Write these on a separate sheet of paper, in pen. Write in paragraph form using complete sentences.

2: What was the most common response to your question? Does this appear more clearly on your dot plot or your histogram?

4: Who did you ask your questions to in your survey? How would your results be different if you asked adults instead of your classmates?
September 4:
I am not in class today. Please be kind and respectful for the sub. I expect better behavior than if I were there. When in doubt, do work in your notebook, work with a partner, maintain a working level noise, and any questions you do not know, write them down and I will answer them on Tuesday.

7th: Today students read about different sampling types found here. After, students took notes and then completed a worksheet on sampling types and bias. For students who did not finish, this will be finished in class on Tuesday.
8th: Today students conducted their own mini study and inputed their information into their own, designed and created frequency table. Students then wrote an analysis to the questions found here. A sample of the questions from class the other day are found here. Anything not finished will be finished on Tuesday.

6th: Today we reviewed the worksheets and activities from Friday. Students then self-assessed what they need help with to prep for class tomorrow. Students have a test Thursday.
7th: Today we went over the types of sampling. We took notes, came up with examples, and quizzed a partner. Students then self-assessed what they need help with for prep for class tomorrow. Students have a test Thursday.
8th: Today we finished our graphs from Friday. We discussed how to find the percentage of each category. After, students answered their analysis questions, in pen and paragraph form. The questions are found below. Students are reminded of their test Thursday.

6th: Today we began our two-day discussion on interquartile range and box-and-whisker-plots. Students have to find the medians of 2 data sets for homework. They are reminded their project is due September 22.
7th: Today students took notes on ratio tables. We did some practice problems in class. For homework, students need to attempt turning them into graphs. I showed students how to set them up; this is the minimal step all students must complete for homework. They are reminded their project is due September 22.
8th: Today we took notes on prime factorization, prime numbers, composite numbers. Students worked on factor trees in class. Whatever wasn't finished is homework. They are reminded their project is due September 22.
September 15:

6th: Today students took notes on applying LCM and GCF. We did some practice problems in class. For homework, students need to finish the problems from class.
7th: Today students went shopping! They applied their knowledge of unit rate to finding the best deals between Ralphs and Vons goods. After, we wrote a summary about unit rate in our notes. Students charts and summaries are due on Monday.
8th: Today we continued our discussion about exponents. We took notes on exponents with coefficients. After, students completed some practice problems. Whatever was not finished needs to be finished for homework.

6th: Today we went over the homework from the weekend. After, students colored and cut out their own fraction strips. This will be a helpful tool for when we begin fractions tomorrow. Students will have a quiz on Thursday.

Students also created a model card for 2 problem types of their choice, with step by step directions on how to complete all parts of the problem. Students will have a quiz Thursday.

October 5:
6th: Today we took notes on words that mean adding or subtracting in word problems. After, students completed some on their own, and wrote their own with a partner. Students need to write their own word problem for homework, using appropriate language of adding or subtracting, must show their work mathematically, and draw a picture to illustrate. In addition, I also gave students practice problems to do for homework if they want extra practice for tomorrow's quiz.
7th: Today was a workday. Students worked on computing proportions directly, as well as word problems. In some cases, students wrote their own word problems. Students are reminded of their quiz tomorrow. I gave students extra problems in case they wanted extra practice. Students also will have a final test on this, in addition to last week's material, this upcoming Friday.
8th: Today students took notes on adding polynomials. After, students completed some practice problems. This will be on their quiz tomorrow. In addition, students will have a culminating test on polynomials (adding, multiplying, dividing) on Friday.

6th: Today students watched two videos. The first video was on multiplying fractions (a review) and the second video was on simplifying fractions. For homework, students have 9 problems in which to multiply out, and then reduce, if possible.

6th: Today students took notes on word problems related to multiplying fractions. After, students used their recipes to write their own word problem. For homework, students have two recipe sets to solve for ingredient measurements.
7th: Today students took notes on absolute value and integers. After, students did some practice problems and created their own number line. Students have 13 problems to complete tonight for homework.
8th: Today students reviewed multiplying and dividing decimals. We reviewed notes and did some practice problems together. Although a review skill, these are essential for out next unit on scientific notation. Students need to complete the 10 problems for homework (do NOT use a calculator unless you are checking your written work) and bring their device tomorrow.
October 14:
6th: Today students worked on word problems with multiplying fractions. Students need to complete the activity in class for homework.
7th: Today students took notes on adding integers. After, students worked on practice problems. Students have 21 problems to complete for homework. They MUST show their work.
